Twin expo for seafarers, OFW families to be launched on Monday

A twin exposition that will ensure the transformation of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including the seafarers, and their families to become community entrepreneurs will be launched on Monday (Aug. 7) in Quezon City.

Organized by the Pamilyang OFW-Small and Medium Entrepreneurs Network Foundation, Inc. (POFW-SMENFI), the events entitled the Filipino Seafarers Family Expo & Forum 2006 and Pamilyang OFWs-SMEs Housing & Home Essentials Trade Fair 2006 will be held on Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) in Pasay City. The former is the 3rd Philippine exhibition and conference on job, livelihood, investment and business opportunities for the seafarers and their families while the latter is the 2nd Philippine exhibition on real estate projects and home Necessities for the OFW and SME families.

POFW-SMENFI President George A. Arriola said the event aims to make the country's more than 8 million OFW families, the 475,000 SME families and those involved in the overseas employment and small and medium enterprise industries aware of the various job, livelihood, investment and business opportunities being offered by the government, private and non-government organization sectors.

The 8 million OFWs, which include the 247,707 seafarers or sea-based workers, are not just “modern-day heroes” but also “great investors” whose remittances help keep the Philippine economy and corporate earnings afloat. The government said the remittances of our OFWs really gave a big boost to our country because of their record level of remittances last year of over $10.7 billion. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is expecting that the OFW remittances would likely hit $11.18 billion or 10 percent higher than last year's remittance.

POFW-SMENFI Marketing Director Rey Camota said many OFW families have free time and excess money which they can utilize as investment in small business enterprises. What is important, in order for them to succeed, is by giving them vital and useful information which is the role being played since 1994 by the foundation in cooperation with the government, private and non-government organization sectors. Interested parties may call the POFW-SMENFI Secretariat at tel. no. 912-5803.
